Counseling Services for Children and Adolescents - Behavior Management

Sometimes, children show disruptive behaviors. These include being aggressive, angry, excessively argumentative, and defiant.

Your child may be going through a disruptive behavior disorder if he or she is showing behaviors that are

  • uncommon for his or her age,

  • persistent over time, or

  • extreme

If your child has anger issues, you can look for some physical signs. These include clenched fists, a specific facial expression, tightness in their body and verbal outbursts. Children may get completely consumed by their anger, which can last up to one hour during one aggressive episode. This harms their emotional, social and academic development, and is an issue that you should address immediately.

There may be several reasons behind your child’s anger, such as stressors, parenting problems, grief, mood disorder, abuse, social skills deficits, learning disabilities, ADHD, and others. It may take more than your careful observation to know exactly what is causing anger issues in your child: you should seek the help of a medical professional.

What Are the Common Signs of a Behavior Disorder?

Does your child

  • persistently lose his or her temper

  • argue a lot

  • refuse to comply with your requests or rules

  • act resentful

  • deliberately annoys others, or

  • frequently blames others for their own misbehavior or mistakes?

He or she likely has Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).

On the other hand, if your child is showing a continuous pattern of aggression towards others and a severe disregard of rules and social norms in school, at home or with peers, he or she may have Conduct Disorder (CD).

If you notice any unusual behaviors in your child, it is best to consult a mental health specialist immediately who can diagnose the problem.
